This is a dynamic list of funding opportunities for undergraduate research. Check back frequently, as the list is often updated. Past deadlines, listed in black, will be updated, but remain on the website so that students are aware that the funding source or opportunity may become available again. At the end of this page you can search for funding from sources outside OSU, as well as funding for underrepresented students. Discover other research opportunities, online at http://ugresearch.adm.ohio-state.edu/discover.html OSU programs There are a variety of on-campus funding sources to support OSU undergraduate student research. Campus Research Funding OpportunitesThe URO has compiled a list of publicized research funding sources at OSU. Students also are encouraged to search college and departmental websites for lesser known funding opportunities at Colleges and Schools and to ask department staff and faculty about possible, other sources to support undergraduate research. Pay close attention to application deadlines. Professional Development Grants for WomenProfessional Development Grants for Women are designed to facilitate professional development and career mobility of women. Full-time undergraduate students at the sophomore level and above are eligible to apply for a Professional Development Grant. Grants up to $1,000 will be made. Deadline: October 25, 2007 and April 17, 2008 International Affairs Faculty and Student Grants CompetitionGrants will be given for projects that explore the languages, cultures, arts, politics, economy, or socio-demographic aspects of a foreign region. Proposals addressing global issues are also eligible if these issues are explored in a regional context. This includes, for example, proposals about public health, public policy, and climate change. Deadline: March 28 , 2008 Other sites for additional funding and research opportunities The Biology Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research CUR's Biology Division is offering a limited number of travel grants, up to $250 each, for undergraduate students presenting original reseach results at a regional or national, discipline-specific meeting during the fiscal year 2007-08. Application deadlines: October 1, 2007 and March 1, 2008 Sigma Xi is an international, multidisciplinary research society that endeavors to encourage support of original work across the spectrum of science and technology.The local chapter of Sigma XI also has research funding and is listed in Campus Research Funding Opportunites. National application deadlines: March 15 and October 15 annually. National Science Foundation: Research Experiences for Undergraduates NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers on topics in the sciences, engineering, ethics, education, and human resources. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Research and Training Opportunities at the National Institutes of Health For those interested in biomedical research, check out the NIH's Summer Internship and Undergraduate Scholarship Programs. Application deadlines: March 1, 2008 and February 29, 2008 respectively. Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Defense Scholarship Program The Department of Defense offers scholarships and fellowships to undergraduate students in the following disciplines: Aeronautical & Astronautical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering; Biosciences & Physiology; Chemical Engineering; Chemistry; Civil Engineering; Cognitive, Neural, Behavioral Sciences & Psychology; Computer & Computational Sciences; Electrical Engineering; Geosciences; Materials Science and Engineering; Mathematics, Operations Research; Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering; Oceanography; and, Physics, Physical Sciences. Deadline: December 14 , 2007 Programs for underrepresented student populations Summer Research Opportunities Program The goal of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented students who pursue academic careers by enhancing their preparation for graduate study through intensive research experiences with faculty mentors.
